At Sail Georgian Bay, we are always excited to hear our youth sailors talk about someday becoming an instructor or Head Coach themselves.  It all starts right here, at the beautiful Meaford Harbour!
Training to someday become an instructor can begin as early as age 7, with our Wet Feet Programme, specially designed for young sailors aged 7-9 years old.  Kids can take this week-long course as many times as they want throughout the summer, until they are 10 years old.  It provides a great start for all sailors!
The next step begins at age 10, when CANSail Level 1 begins at Sail Georgian Bay.  Following Sail Canada's national sailing instruction programme, this level introduces students to the mechanics of how a boat moves through the water using the wind. They learn how to rig their sailboat, steer using a tiller and trim sails. They will be able to sail a basic course in light winds with an instructor nearby in a coach boat. Certification usually occurs following 1-2 weeks of instruction.
CANSail Level 2 - sailors refine their skills and begin the process of building on their previous instruction. Certification usually occurs following 1-2 weeks of instruction.
CANSail Level 3 - performance sailing techniques and racing skills are learned and practiced. Students begin competing at local regattas. This level usually takes 3-4 weeks of instruction to become certified.
CANSail Level 4 focuses on consistency and tactical awareness. Sailors use a spinnaker sail and a trapeze.  Racing skills continue to be developed. Students attend local and regional regattas as registered competitors. This level may take 4 weeks or more of instruction to become certified.
CANSail Levels 5 and 6 focus on competitive racing skills and tactics.  These levels are designed for athletes looking to compete and instruct. Sailors are expected to have complete mastery of their boat in all conditions. This level will take many weeks to become certified and may have to be done at a regatta or another club.
The Path to Becoming an Instructor Begins: All the Must-Do's

Be 16 years of age in the year you want to instruct.
Obtain your pleasure craft licence so that you can operate a coach boat.
Obtain your marine radio licence so that you can use the VHF radios at the school to communicate with harbour boat traffic as well as other coaches (mandatory at SGB).
Take the Fundamentals Course to learn how to transition from being a student to an instructor.
Take the Wet Feet Course to learn how to make our youngest sailors feel safe and comfortable on the water and in a sailboat (preferred at SGB).
Take an approved First Aid Course, the Coach Boat Safety course and the Safe Sport Training Course.
Obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check from your local OPP (if 18 or older)
Becoming a Student Volunteer for a week or two, working alongside our instructors and Head Coach, can be very helpful if you are interested in becoming an Instructor.
