What Is The Wet Feet Programme?

For ages 7-9 yrs with little or no previous sailing experience

Program Goals:
To build confidence in and around water in a safe, supervised environment.
To introduce children to the basics of sailing suitable for their young age.
Low student-to-instructor ratio (6:1) ensures close attention and safety for our young sailors.

What the Kids Do:
Learn: how to properly put on and fasten a life jacket.
Discover:  how to be safe on a dock and around boats.
Achieve:  getting in and out of a small boat
Figure Out: how to sit in a boat to keep it balanced.
Practice: how to tie simple knots.
Learn: parts of a boat
Experience:  how to use a tiller to steer the boat
Be Amazed:  hoist the sail, and sail for the first time!

On-Water Fun:  Sailors at SGB will use Laser Pico dinghy sailboats - small, stable boats designed for small children. Lessons often begin with "paddle-sailing" or being towed by a coach boat to learn steering, before progressing to using sails.

Instructors use games and activity books to teach safety, knots, and basic wind direction.

On-Land Fun: To prevent fatigue, the program includes off-water activities such as nature walks, field games and exploring the beach.  If it rains, our Instructors have lots of fun things to do at the clubhouse! We provide comfy mats for the kids to sit on or have a bit of a nap!

How Long Does It Take?
  • Levels 1 and 2:  on average, each level takes 1-2 weeks, sometimes longer, often depends on weather.
  • Levels 3 and 4 require a high level of competence both in the boats and in sailing theory. This usually takes at least four to five weeks for each level.
  • Wet Feet:  A one-week programme that can be repeated as often as you would like until your child is 10 years old. A CANSail programme designed to help our youngest sailors become comfortable around sailboats and the water.
Keep in mind that all students learn at different rates so this is a guideline only.

SGB offers one-week instruction sessions; however, if possible, we encourage sailors to register for multiple weeks, especially for Levels 2, 3 and 4.  This will allow our SGB sailors to experience a wider variety of weather conditions, which enhances their technical skills.  Students maximize their time on the water and gain greater confidence.
