What is CANSail?
CANSail is Sail Canada’s dinghy training program, created by experts in the sport and designed to provide standardized training in sailing techniques, that is taught by Sail Canada certified instructors and coaches at sailing schools and clubs across Canada. The CANSail training programme fosters a high level of performance and self-confidence in sailing, and promotes life-long participation in the sport. CANSail levels begin with the Wet Feet/iCanSail for children as young as 5 years old (SGB begins at age 7), and progresses through Levels 1-6 (SGB currently teaches students up to Level 4) CANSail Adult programmes follow Level 1 instruction and can be provided by certified Community Coaches (SGB runs evening adult lessons with our two community coaches).
CANSail programming means lots of time on the water in a safe, fun and active learning environment, with relatively less time spent in a classroom. Sailors learn sailing skills and enter into fun and challenging experiences suited to their age and stage of development. The programming is designed to get - and keep - sailors excited about sailing for life!
Why CANSail?
CANSail is designed to be a set of progressive learn-to-sail standards focused on providing sailors with a solid foundation of core skills. It allows sailors to learn and progress in any type of boat and consolidates key skills and solid experiences before adding complex skills.
Long Term Sailor Development Framework
The CANSail Dinghy standards and program delivery support systems have been developed to meet objectives of Sail Canada and Provincial partners by implementing the Long Term Sailor Development Framework (LTSD). The CANSail levels 1-6 correlate with the first four stages of development in the LTSD, with skills-learning and experiences meeting the objectives of the developmental stage.
